Common experiences

Reported experiences range from a quiet softening of mental chatter to vivid imagery, emotional release, a sense of distance from habitual thought patterns, or a dissociative state. Effects vary by individual, dose, route, and setting. There is no "correct" experience.

Session environment

Environments matter. Responsible settings tend to be quiet, dim, comfortable, and equipped to monitor vital signs. Clinicians remain present or immediately available, and protocols exist for any unexpected reaction.

Set and setting

"Set" refers to your mindset, intentions, and state on the day. "Setting" refers to the physical and interpersonal environment. Both shape the experience. A supportive setting cannot guarantee a positive experience, but a chaotic one can make a difficult experience more likely.

Music

Many programs use carefully sequenced music to support the arc of the experience - gentle entry, deeper middle, gradual return. See our playlists guide for an educational deep-dive on why music plays this role.

Relaxation techniques

Slow breathing, a brief body scan, and releasing the urge to control the experience are commonly recommended. Trying to "make something happen" tends to be counterproductive. Trust the team, trust the setting, and let the time-limited experience unfold.

Frequently asked questions

What does a session feel like?+

Experiences vary widely. Some people report a sense of distance from ordinary thought patterns, sensory shifts, emotional clarity or release, and a time-limited dissociative state. Others describe more subtle effects.

How long does a session last?+

The acute experience is typically brief - often 40 to 90 minutes depending on route and dose - followed by supervised recovery time until you are stable.

Do I need to do anything during the session?+

Responsible programs encourage a relaxed, receptive posture - eyes closed, headphones on, supported by a calm environment. There is no performance to give.
