Basics

The autonomic nervous system has sympathetic (mobilization), parasympathetic (rest and connection), and dorsal vagal (shutdown) modes. Healthy regulation involves moving fluidly between them in response to context.

Why it matters

Trauma, chronic stress, and depression are associated with reduced autonomic flexibility - the nervous system gets stuck in mobilized or shutdown states.

Levers

Slow breathing (especially extended exhales), cold exposure, gentle movement, safe social contact, and grounding practices reliably shift autonomic state.

Honest framing

Polyvagal theory is widely used clinically; some of its specific neuroanatomical claims are debated. The practical regulation tools it inspires are well-supported.
