Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) dampens neuronal firing. One proposed mechanism of ketamine's rapid effect is preferential blockade of NMDA receptors on GABAergic interneurons, producing a disinhibition-driven glutamate surge in pyramidal neurons.
