Ketamine Safety: An Overview
Most risk is procedural, not pharmacological.
Acute session safety
Sub-anesthetic ketamine acutely raises blood pressure and heart rate, produces dissociation, and may cause nausea or dizziness. These are monitored and managed in a clinical setting.
Cumulative safety
Long-term high-dose use is associated with urological complications and cognitive effects. Therapeutic, intermittent dosing in clinical settings has not shown these patterns in published cohorts.
Procedural safety
Most adverse events trace to inadequate screening, missing monitoring, or unsupervised at-home protocols without proper guardrails.
