Mindfulness Basics

Mindfulness is the trainable skill of noticing what's happening, without immediately reacting to it.

What it is — and isn't

  • Is: paying attention to present experience on purpose, with curiosity.
  • Isn't: emptying your mind, forcing calm, or escaping difficulty.
  • Isn't: a religion or a personality transplant.

A 10-minute starter practice

  1. Sit upright, eyes closed or softly down.
  2. Notice 3 things you can hear, then your breath at the nostrils.
  3. When attention wanders (it will, often), gently return to the breath.
  4. End by noticing how your body feels right now.
