What is reasonably well established
Music activates auditory, limbic, and reward systems, including striatal dopamine release during moments of peak pleasure. It modulates autonomic markers such as heart rate and skin conductance, and it is a powerful cue for autobiographical memory.
What is emerging
Studies of music in psychedelic-assisted therapy report associations between musical experience quality and outcome ratings. Ketamine's plasticity window is well documented preclinically. Connecting the two causally in humans remains an open research question.
What is overstated
Claims that specific frequencies rewire the brain, repair DNA, or entrain brainwaves to therapeutic states are not supported by credible evidence.
Why this still matters practically
Even without a settled mechanism, music demonstrably shapes emotional safety and the felt quality of a session - which is reason enough for clinicians to treat it as part of the protocol.
