Sleep is one of the most underrated levers for emotional consolidation.

Medically reviewed by: Pending medical review(draft)Last updated: June 4, 2026Evidence: Educational overview

Why sleep matters

Sleep, particularly REM, is when emotional memory is processed. Disrupted sleep tends to undermine integration; protected sleep tends to support it.

Foundations

Consistent schedule, dark and cool room, light exposure in the morning, and limiting alcohol and late caffeine. Simple, not easy.

Practices to try

  • Same wake time every day
  • Morning light within 30 minutes of waking
  • No screens 30 minutes before bed
